Parish Life

Parish Life at St. Matthew’s is a kaleidoscope of interests and activities, built on the gifts and talents of our parishioners. It includes partnerships in service to the local community and the world, fun activities and events that bind us together in Christ, the stewardship of our lives, resources, and campus for the Church, and a vibrant Faith & Arts program.

Knowing, Sharing, and Making History: The St. Matthew’s Bicentennial Celebrations 2024-2026

In 2024, St. Matthew’s begins its three year celebration of the parish’s history from colonial times to the present, focusing in 2024 on the bicentennial of the parish’s organization by lay people, in 2025 on the bicentennial of it recognition by the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina, and in 2026 on the bicentennial of the consecration of the church building.

Faith & Arts at St. Matthews

St. Matthew’s has always been a place where the arts have thrived. We are blessed with many creative people within our midst: singers, poets, photographers, painters, writers and playwrights, potters, and musicians. We are blessed with an intellectual curiosity which provides the freedom for art to be expressed. We have the beautiful setting of our church building to offer for programs, musical events in particular.

Fellowship & Hospitality

We enjoy fun and fellowship together, united in our love for the body of Christ at St. Matthew’s. Many of our events are built around the seasons and traditions of the Church, like the Epiphany Christmas Tree burning and Shrove Tuesday Pancake supper. Others are beloved St. Matthew’s traditions, like the Mystery Walk and Secret Pal Breakfast.

Holistic Stewardship

At St. Matthew’s, we seek to be good stewards of all that we’ve given, in our lives and as part of this vibrant community of faith. We practice holistic stewardship, which means we think about stewardship not only through the lens of financial giving- which is important- but also in how we “steward” the whole of our individual lives and our community resources in service to Christ.
