Book Discussion: Loving My Enemies and Other Outlandish Pursuits, July 19th, 5:00 pm.

Please join us for a book discussion with author Rev. Angie Wright, July 19th, 5:00 pm in the Cooke Lawrence room.

Loving My Enemies & Other Outlandish Pursuits follows Rev. Angie Wright's journey as an activist and pastor to stand against hate without indulging the temptation of hating the haters. In her story, spirituality meets social justice and betrayal pushes against the ethic of forgiveness. Rev. Wright probes questions most of us have to face at times in our  lives: How do we reconsider our relationship with people we’ve been  taught to hate and fear? And when others wreak harm on us or our communities, can we respond in ways that summon their humanity while protecting our own?

Rev. Wright was the founding pastor of Beloved Community United Church of Christ, a multiracial congregation in downtown Birmingham, Alabama, where she served for 16 years. She was a founder of Alabama Arise and a leader in the statewide effort to overturn Alabama's harsh anti-immigrant laws. She founded Good Work Self-Employment Project in Durham, NC, and served on the staff and boards of numerous local, regional and national non-profit organizations. Now retired, Angie lives in Hillsborough and spends her time gardening, hanging out with family and friends, and doing her part to make the world a safer, more humane place for all God's children.
