The Episcopal Church Elects Its Next Presiding Bishop
Sean Rowe, the bishop of Northwest Pennsylvania and bishop provisional of Western New York, has been elected as the next presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church at the 81st General Convention. He was elected by a nominating committee that include bishops, clergy, and laity. He is a graduate of Virginia Theological Seminary and was ordained to the priesthood in 2000.
As presiding bishop, Rowe will serve as the public face of the Episcopal Church. His responsibilities will include visiting every Episcopal diocese, participating in the ordination and consecration of bishops, and receiving and responding to disciplinary complaints against bishops. Bishop Rowe begins his nine-year term on November 1, 2024. His installation will take place on November 2, at Washington National Cathedral.
