SUNDAY FORUM Sept 15: “The Gathering Up of Broken Strands:” The Renewal of St. Matthew’s in 1824

A later transcription of the original 1824 document of parish organization, with lay people signing below.

“The Gathering Up of Broken Strands:” The Renewal of St. Matthew’s in 1824 -- Sunday Forum, September 15 at 9:15 in the Fellowship Hall

In his Centennial Celebration Historical Address in August 1924, Bishop Cheshire described the 1824 reorganization of St. Matthew's as the "gathering up of broken strands, and renewing continuity with the past, the perpetuation of old life under new forms."

Members of the Parish Archives and History Committee will relate the historic events leading up to the signing of the Certificate of Organization in 1824 by the 31 lay people who committed themselves to forming St. Matthew's Church. Robert+ will follow with remarks on the role of the laity.

This program is offered in preparation for our St. Matthew's Day Bicentennial Celebration on September 22nd when we will sign a new "charter" reaffirming that commitment to be the people of St. Matthew's in our day.
