Sacred Heart Concert & Community Sing: Feb 25 at 7:30 pm

Faith and Arts along with St. Matthew’s Bicentennial Celebration and The Women’s Singing Circle are excited to present this event which will be the be the third offering of the newly-invigorated Faith and Arts program.

In 2024, our Bicentennial is celebrating the years 1750-1850. The Sacred Harp is a hymnal that was first published in 1844 and includes music written and collected between 1770 and 1820. .

“Sacred Harp” is a style of music written for four parts to be sung with passion and without instruments excepting “the sacred harp,” the human voice.  The name of this musical style reflects the belief that all can sing and all are welcome to sing because everyone has a sacred harp.  This concert and sing-a-long honors that belief.  “The Sacred Harp” style began in New England but found a home in the American South.

The Women’s Singing Circle, an ecumenical group, has been gathering monthly at St. Matthew’s for prayer and singing since April 2009.  At this event, the Circle will sing songs from the Sacred Harp tradition and lead those attending in hymns from the time period. So many beloved hymns were written during this time, many of which we still love to sing today:   Amazing Grace, Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing, Rock of Ages, Oh, For a Thousand Tongues to Sing, Oh God Our Help in Ages Past, just to name a few.

Please join us for a wonderful evening.  All are welcome - no ticket needed though donations are gladly accepted.
