Candlemas - Sunday, February 2

Candlemas, celebrated yearly on February 2, is a Christian feast marking the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple and the Purification of Mary, as described in Luke 2:22–40. This year, the Feast Day falls on a Sunday and takes priority over the assigned lectionary readings. Traditionally, it is a day when candles are blessed, symbolizing Christ as the Light of the World. The feast falls 40 days after Christmas and has roots in both Jewish purification rituals and early Christian traditions.
