Bicentennial Sunday Forum and Lecture: Sept 29, 9:15am and 3:00 pm.

Book Study in preparation: September 16 and 23, 7:00- 8:00 pm; zoom meeting channel

Sydney Nathans, an American historian known for his extensive work in American history with an emphasis on African American and Southern history, will offer two lectures on Sunday, September 29th.  Dr. Nathans is a professor emeritus at Duke University, where he taught for many years. Nathans has received recognition for his detailed and passionate research, often shedding light on lesser-known historical narratives and figures.

Dr. Nathans' seminal work, To Free a Family: The Journey of Mary Walker, published in 2012, will be the focus of his visit. This historical account tells the poignant and powerful story of Mary Walker, an enslaved woman who escaped bondage in North Carolina in 1848. The book delves into her desperate struggle to reunite with her family, whom she had to leave behind.

September 29th at 9:15 am in the fellowship hall, Dr. Nathans will speak about “The Faith Journey of Mary Walker in Slavery and Freedom.” That afternoon at 3:00 pm in the church, he will talk about his research and writing of the book: his journey of discovery of sources for it, intertwined with the story of Mary Walker's quest to recovery her family.   All are welcome!

In preparation, the Racial Justice and Reconciliation Committee is hosting a book study and discussion of To Free a Family: The Journey of Mary Walker over two Monday evenings via the St. Matthew's Zoom Meeting Channel.  Books are available to be signed out from our own Graebner library; however, reading the book is not a pre-requisite for participating and enjoying the discussions!
