Becoming Beloved Community: A bicentennial celebration with Presiding Bishop Michael Curry and Rector Emeritus Brooks Graebner. June 21, 10-3pm.
Bishop Curry and Brooks+ on the rededication of the church.
This summer celebration with The Most Rev. Michael Curry, The Rev. Dr. Brooks Graebner, and The Rev. Robert Fruehwirth explores the history and meaning of Beloved Community in the Episcopal Church, in this diocese, and in our parish.
This celebration is part of our parish bicentennial celebrations. In 1825 the parish of St. Matthew’s was recognized by the Diocese of North Carolina as a parish, and the relationships between Bishop and Rector have always been close.
To prevent over-crowding, this event is ticketed. All tickets have now been claimed but you may add yourself to the waitlist by contacting Sonja. Tickets are for the entire event, including afternoon worship.
Brooks and Michael will reflect on the “beloved community” movement in the Episcopal Church, starting in 1967 at the national level, becoming central to this diocese during Michael’s time as our Bishop, and then launched in 2017 by Michael as an intiative for the entire Church. Robert+ and current parish leaders will reflect on changes in the parish since 2017. The conversation will conclude with our youth group talking with ++Michael as they return from their pilgrimage exploring the heritage of beloved community icon and saint Pauli Murray. They day will be capped with a celebratory Eucharist, Presiding Bishop Curry preaching. Click here for the service bulletin.
Lunch will be a picnic on the lawn and in our buildings. We invite you to bring a picnic lunch; Parish Life will provide drinks and ic ecream.
All speaking events, panels, and worship will be in the church.
