Racial Reckoning and Reconciliation
St. Matthew’s in Hillsborough North Carolina has been deeply affected by its foundation in the sin of slavery and racial violence.
For the past twenty five years the parish has been involved in a process of facing into that history with the faith that nothing is beyond the power of God’s redemption, and God’s healing and reconciliation.
Further, we have used our history, as difficult as it is, to direct our mission now in the world, following the insight of The Rt. Rev. Rowan Williams “God redeemes past sin by making it the ground of future mission.”
Out of this, we have become ambassadors of reconciliation, by our participation in Orange County Justice United, by our long relationship with Dickerson Chapel, by our fervent engagement with Heaven Practice, a multi-church program of worship and table fellowship (pictured above) that brings together white and historically black churches across denominations.
Pilgrimages, Book Groups, Lent Series, and Sunday Forums are regular formation offerings to deepen this working of God with us.

LGBTQ+ Ministry
St. Matthew’s has long been an affirming parish with LBTQ+ persons serving in top leadership roles.
We are also aware of how deeply the Church was been unwelcoming and damaging for people who identiy as LGTQ+. As a response, we have created programs and book studies particularly for this community and their allies.
