Pilgrim’s Progress Chapter 5

Week Five

I decided to pursue this Pilgrimage journey with St. Matthew’s out of a curiosity and desire for a better understanding of race and truth telling in our nation and within the St. Matthew’s community.  Friends from other organizations and churches had gone on similar pilgrimages and described it as “life changing”.
I can attest that my eyes have been opened and my understanding of things that occurred in Selma and Montgomery and throughout our nation has been broadened. It will take me a lot of continued soul searching, reading and journaling for me to take it all in, so the experience continues.
There were many joyful aspects of our time together as fellow pilgrims. We also delighted and were welcomed by the people who we met in restaurants, on the street, on buses and in the museums and parks. The Legacy Museum, Social Justice Memorial and Freedom Park were incredibly well done and are a comprehensive telling of the stories of racial trauma in America.
My prayer is that our pilgrimage together has led us to have a better understanding of our actions and that we will continue to be refashioned into wiser, humbler, and more compassionate beings by this experience.
