“A Rose for Emily” with Vic Strandberg, Emeritus Professor of English at Duke University Sunday, August 9th, 4:00 pm; Cooke-Lawrence room

Please join us for special afternoon discussion on William Faulkner’s short story “A Rose for Emily,” led by recently retired professor of English Literature Vic Strandberg. Here’s what he writes about our time together:    “For our meeting on August 9, we will first look at Faulkner's celebrated Nobel Speech, which is available online.  (I hope the Church can provide printed copies at our meeting.)  We will then correlate the Speech with "A Rose for Emily," perhaps Faulkner's most famous—and infamous—short story.  To connect the (noble) Nobel Speech with this bizarre tale can provide a key to understanding Faulkner's stories and novels at large.  I am happy to have the opportunity to do just that.”

The church will provide copies of the speech. You can also access the Nobel Speech online. The short story can be accessed here: https://eclass.uoa.gr/modules/document/file.php/ENL474/Texts/Weeks%208-9/Faulkner%2C%20a%20Rose%20for%20Emily.pdf. We will meet Sunday, August 9th at 4:00 pm in the Cooke Lawrence room.

You also will enjoy reading about Vic Strandberg; he and wife Penny have been long time members of St. Matthew’s. He is delighted to have the afternoon to share with us, and we are delighted to have him. You can read more about Vic’s storied career at Duke here: https://www.theassemblync.com/news/education/higher-education/duke-english-professor-strandberg-retires-60-years/
